Many thanks for the pointers on this fault so far ;-) And the thumbs up's - Cheers it's appreciated! - Makes the grime behind your nails all the more worthwhile I can tell you!

Progress over the weekend was to rig up my auto electrician mates ocilliscope to take some probe readings on the Hall senders / bank 1 and bank 2. I can conclude that I think the sensors either out of my original R32 block or from the Audi 3.2 head are working within tolerance. Or as expected, like the chap on the Vortex forum I don’t see readings on my bank 209 field 3 so not quite sure what the implication of that is.

I chased the wiring all the way back to the pin outs on the ECU and continuity looks ok, getting 5v and an active ground to both plugs / sockets.

Removed both the senders and checked for metal debris with magnets, everything looks ok. I’m still getting the same error or different errors if I swap the sensors or loom between the 2 sensors and it appears to follow the loom location and not the cam alignment so this could still potentially point towards a dodgy connection. Umm.. most puzzling!

G28 engine speed sensor has been checked but not replaced as yet, after all I’m getting accurate to GPS Speedo signals  &  GALA pulse / Climatronic KMH readings so I don’t suspect this is the problem although I plan to check this as my next point of call. Most of the US forums point towards an elongated chain tensioner, but I don’t think this is the case on inspection when I had the cam cover off checking for wear. The engine was clean, and the condition of the clutch / flywheel was consistent with the 20k it was supposed to have driven.
- In sharp contrast to my original chain / tensioner ;-)

I don’t want to have to do a chain change…especially given the involved in just removing the inlet manifold to get to the cam cover means taking the bumper and slam panel off!

Then again I’ve a few more things to try before I resort to doing that, the interesting thing is with both hall / cam sensors disconnected the car will not start, with one connected in either bank 1 or 2 she starts and runs fine / with both connected it runs rough during what appears to be an adaptation period.

The other thing I’m considering is - if my when my car was tuned in Holland, if the cam alignment was out I wonder if this ‘correlation’ is set and therefore expected. I may try another ECU / map or investigate this further.

Judging by the amounts of posts on other forums this fault seems quite common – surely it’s just out of correlation somehow…

Deep Blue Pearl R32 was EIP TURBO. - But big upgrade planned: Haldex Upgrade, Sachs Paddle Clutch, Black Centred 18" BBS LM's, Black Badges, Smoked lights, OEM TV and TMC. - Loads of other mods and a nice plate ;-) My other ride is the STUKA (2001 B5 RS4)

Another thing that can cause this is a failed tensioner bolt, at the rear of the block there is a retaining bolt that is spring loaded on the plastic guide. This turned out to be my problem all along.... sprocket change later to discover it though doh!
